Volunteerism Organizations in Texas

This mission of the Volunteer Center of North Texas is to "transfer communities and strengthen nonprofits through volunteerism." "This center offers a wide variety of programs that serve individual volunteers, volunteer groups, corporations, and more than 1,700 nonprofit organizations."

These organizations have volunteers that they send to certain areas that are in need of help. This volunteer center also does back-round checks on each volunteer to make sure they have a clear criminal record. The Volunteer Center has a website that allows people to look at a calendar full of events and choose which one they would like to participate in. This organization has over 1500 volunteers a month and without these people none of those jobs would be possible.

Family Trip to Kenya

There are thousands of people in our world today that are willing to volunteer their time and help those in need. In a New York Times article that I found, there is a story about a young family who went on a trip to Kenya to help in their community development. Not only did Carolyn Everson go, she decided to take her husband and her 9-year old twins along with her. This family went along with other families under the Me to We company that offered transformatvie trips like this one. Although this trip was very costly averaging about $4,000 a person Everson wanted to take her family on this journey.

While Ms. Everson's family was in Kenya they "carried jugs of water on their backs alongside tribal women, and helped build a school." Everson's children helped out the community but they also learned hundreds of new things while they were there. "This trip was a  chance for us, as a family, to play a global role in helping others while also expanding our worldview" Everson explains. It is crucial that he children learned to dedicate their time to helping those in need at a young age. This type of volunteer work is very beneficial to the community in Kenya. This family went above and beyond with helping out those children in need of a better community.

Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas

In the article, Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas thousands of people came out to help members who had suffered from Hurricane Sandy. Many New Yorkers felt grateful for everything they had and felt that they needed to help those in need. These New Yorker volunteers decided to go into the hardest-hit sections of the city and help at city relief centers. These volunteers provided carloads of supplies, food, and clothing ready to be handed out at Rockaway Beach. These people tried to get people to donate money to the Mayor's Fund which they will be able to use to get more supplies. There are numerous of organizations that were set up to help those in the affected areas. One organization, New York Cares, has about 800 people helping out. "The group is canvassing residents in the heavily storm-damaged neighborhoods about their needs, providing them information about available city services, distributing food and water, and visiting home-bound seniors." Not only are individuals willing to volunteer, corporations are also donating supplies and food. For instance, Walmart has contributed six trailer trucks full of food, beverages, cleaning supplies, and board games to New York State. Pepsi is another corporation that donated five trailer trucks full of beverages and snacks to New York. These corporations tremendously helping all those people who lost everything due to Hurricane Sandy. Organizations like the Red Cross are even tending to help residents in the region. These volunteers are doing these jobs out of the good of their hearts and are helping our world move forward from this devastation.
