Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas

In the article, Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas thousands of people came out to help members who had suffered from Hurricane Sandy. Many New Yorkers felt grateful for everything they had and felt that they needed to help those in need. These New Yorker volunteers decided to go into the hardest-hit sections of the city and help at city relief centers. These volunteers provided carloads of supplies, food, and clothing ready to be handed out at Rockaway Beach. These people tried to get people to donate money to the Mayor's Fund which they will be able to use to get more supplies. There are numerous of organizations that were set up to help those in the affected areas. One organization, New York Cares, has about 800 people helping out. "The group is canvassing residents in the heavily storm-damaged neighborhoods about their needs, providing them information about available city services, distributing food and water, and visiting home-bound seniors." Not only are individuals willing to volunteer, corporations are also donating supplies and food. For instance, Walmart has contributed six trailer trucks full of food, beverages, cleaning supplies, and board games to New York State. Pepsi is another corporation that donated five trailer trucks full of beverages and snacks to New York. These corporations tremendously helping all those people who lost everything due to Hurricane Sandy. Organizations like the Red Cross are even tending to help residents in the region. These volunteers are doing these jobs out of the good of their hearts and are helping our world move forward from this devastation.

  1. I agree with your opinions and views of volunteerism. I think that volunteerism is very important especially with helping down at the shore due to Hurricane Sandy. There are always ways for people to get involved and help others, not only in your own community but in others too..good job!
